Extra Credit- Due Wednesday 11/4/09

What is metaphysical poetry? and who are the metaphysical poets?

You can earn 10 bonus points!!! Be sure to include your sources.

Andrew Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress"

For Wednesday, 11/4/09, read Marvell's poem, "To His Coy Mistress" in the Bedford Anthology(the big thick book). Read the background information starting on the bottom of page 842. Then read the poem several times for understanding. When you finish reading jot down some ideas for questions 1-3 on the bottom of 844.

Be prepared for a quiz (on Wednesday) and discussion on Friday. I recommend that you look back in your notes on reading poetry. Post any questions you may have here.

Coy: Modest; demure; shy
Mistress: an archaic term for one's beloved
Ganges: a river of northern India and Bangladesh that is sacred to Hindus
Humber: a river that flows through Marvel's native town of Hull
conversation of the Jews: the Christian belief that all Jews would convert at the Last

Anticipation Guide for Macbeth- In Class 11/9/09

As you wait to conference with me answer the following questions to prepare for our unit on Macbeth. Feel free to read and comment on other posts. When you finish view the Macbeth links provided for you on the homepage.

1. Have you ever given in to temptation?


2.Do you believe in prophecies? If you are unsure of the meaning, look it up at Merriam-Webster Dictionary.


3. Do you believe everyone is in a personal battle of good versus evil?



4. How do you decide what is good and what is evil?



5. Do you believe in witches?



6. What is the difference between greed and ambition?



7. Do you believe the adage, "You reap what you sow?"



8. Do you believe that fate directs our lives or that our actions alone determine our circumstances?



9. You probably would not break your moral code for a stranger, but what about for a loved one?



10. If someone prophesied you would become someone of importance (i.e.-President, Homecoming King/Queen, etc), would you wait for it to happen or would you try to make it happen? Explain.


11. Do you listen to your conscience?


12. Have you ever experienced the feeling of guilt?
If so, explain how it made you feel.

Revising Essays- Due Wednesday, 11/4/09

As you revise your essay on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales what are some pointers that you need to consider? I encourage all of you to look back in your notes and handouts on effective writing.
